Wedding bells are in the air for Singer Bobby Brown. Brown is planning a June wedding to his fiancée Alicia Etheridge. They have a young son Cassius. The couple has a Father’s Day wedding in Hawaii planned. Brown is also releasing a new CD. It’ll be his first in 14 years and will be called Masterpiece. This will be Brown’s second marriage after being married to the late Whitney Houston.
Speaking of Houston, VH1 will be paying homage to her during their next Divas special. The taping takes place in December. Houston has made appearances on Divas in 1999, 2002 and 2003.
At press time, jury deliberations are underway for William Balfour, the man charged with murdering the mother, brother and seven-year old nephew of Singer/Actress Jennifer Hudson. Hudson, who attended and testified at the trial, was there for closing arguments. If found guilty, Balfour faces life in prison.
Can Oprah Winfrey’s OWN make a turn around? So far, the cable network has lost $330 million since its debut January 2011. Can the OWN survive another year? The top bosses feel the network will make a turnaround next year with its latest programming.
Singer and former Reality Star Jessica Simpson has signed a $3 million deal with Weight Watchers. Simpson and her fiancé Eric Johnson recently celebrated the birth of their first son Maxwell, who weighed in at 9 lbs. and 13 ounces. The press was not shy about pointing out Simpson’s weight gain during her pregnancy, but the singer has turned the tables. The Weight Watchers deal returns her to the spotlight and adds to her very lucrative business ventures including lines of beauty products, shoes and handbags.
Pepsi is bringing back the late Michael Jackson. In a new deal with the Jackson Estate, Pepsi is going to use The King Of Pop’s image in a new marketing campaign. It was back in 1983, when Jackson and Pepsi made headlines because Jackson’s hair caught on fire while filming a Pepsi commercial with his brothers.
Chaka Khan is showing off her new body. Khan recently lost 60 pounds through a diet and lifestyle change, and she looks like a new woman. The 59-year old former member of Rufus says she had to say goodbye to high blood pressure and diabetes. Khan has been alcohol and drug free for eight years. Khan has also put her hat in the ring to be a judge on Simon Cowell’s X-Factor. Khan, with over 40 years of experience in the music business and ten Grammys under her belt, would be a great addition. Why? Because she can actually sing! Plus, Khan knows the meaning of business in the words music business.
Anita Baker is working hard on a new album, and it’s coming out this fall. In the meantime, Baker is hitting the road this summer going on tour.
Musiq Soulchild has a new book coming out June 25th called 143 Love. According to Musiq, it’s a love and relationship book.
Singers D’Angelo and Tank have been added to the lineup of the Essence Music Festival. D’Angelo, 37, is working on a new album, and he’s been touring overseas. Tank’s latest CD, This Is How I Feel, arrived in stores this week.
Terrence Howard, Colin Farrell, Armand Assante and the cast of Dead Man Down are making their fans very happy as they film the movie in our city. The actors have been very friendly and taking lots of pictures with their Philly fans. Dead Man Down is about a mobster taking revenge on those who killed his family, and Farrell plays the title character in this mobster seeking revenge thriller.
Halle Berry's child custody dispute is heating up. Her baby daddy, Model Gabriel Aubry, wants money. Aubry and Berry have been battling it out over their daughter Nahla, and Aubry says he wants a half a million bucks to raise their daughter in the lifestyle she has become accustom to with Halle. Aubry also wants Berry to pay his lawyers' fees and $20,000 a month to raise his daughter in a proper environment.
In addition to his men’s line at the K&G Fashion Superstore, Blair Underwood will be introducing a new cologne and candle line called Interconnected. Underwood is also currently on Broadway in A Street Car Named Desire. The cast also includes Nicole Ari Parker, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Wood Harris.
Bill Bellamy and Vivica A. Fox are reuniting for a new TV sitcom. The two are former co-stars of the movie Getting Played and TV sitcom The Bill Bellamy Show from 1996. In the new show, called Mr. Box Office, Bellamy plays a movie star who gets into trouble with the law and has to serve out his sentence teaching underprivileged kids in South Central. Vivica will play a cougar teacher who is on the loose, and former Basketball Player Rick Fox will also star. Producers are trying to work out a deal to get the show a fall debut on either the TBS network or The CW.
The music world is mourning the loss of Adam “MCA” Yauch of the Beastie Boys. Yauch, 47, was a self taught vocalist and bassist. In the 80’s, he ruled the charts as a member of The Beastie Boys with hits like Brass Monkey, Hey Ladies, Get It Together, Sure Shot and (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party). In 1986, their album Licensed To Ill was the first hip hop album to top the albums’ chart. Yauch died after a more than three-year battle with cancer and a month after The Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
We remember famed Hair Stylist Vidal Sassoon. The 84-year old died of natural causes. He opened his first hair salon back in 1954 and became a stylist to the stars. His styling alone for Mia Farrow in the 1968 movie Rosemary’s Baby made him an icon. He later sold his name to Proctor & Gamble and launched the legendary international line of Vidal Sassoon hair care products.
A fourth show has been added for Beyonce at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City. The fourth show is Monday, May 28th.
Model/Actress Kenya Moore is rumored to be joining the cast of the Real Housewives of Atlanta. This would mean she’d be replacing the exiting Sheree Whitfield.
Tyler James Williams is returning to TV. Williams is best known for playing “Chris” on Everybody Hates Chris. Williams has joined the cast of a new show with Matthew Perry (Friends) called Go On.
Gary Coleman’s exes are fighting over his estate. Coleman is best known for his role as "Arnold" on the TV sitcom Diff’rent Strokes. He died in 2010 of a brain hemorrhage. Coleman’s ex-wife Shannon Price and his jumpoff Manager Anna Gray are fighting over his estate and property. Each woman claim he left it to her. Hmmmmmmmmm!
Tracy Morgan’s health issues have his managers concerned. He recently got ill in Denver. Earlier this year, he collapsed at the Sundance Film Festival. A couple of years ago, Morgan got a kidney transplant donated by an ex-girlfriend (Tanisha Hall) shortly before they broke up.
The life story of Rock Legend Jimi Hendrix is finally coming to the big screen. Andre 3000 from OutKast will star as Hendrix.
Paula Patton has replaced Taraji P. Henson in David E. Talbert's big screen adaptation of his novel Baggage Claim. In the romantic comedy, Patton will play a woman pledging to avoid becoming the oldest and only woman never married in her family.
Deion Sanders gets to keep the kids in his ongoing saga with his estranged wife Pilar Sanders. The Sanders have been making headlines with their disputes as they prepare to divorce. After 11 years and three kids, it’s over between the former football player and his wife. The latest incident that involved the two revolves around a fight at their home. A judge ruled that Deion gets to keep the kids temporarily, and Pilar has to stay 500 yards away from their home. Pilar was arrested for attacking her husband, and the judge ruled that Deion was justified in defending himself.
Get well to the Godfather Of GoGo Chuck Brown. The 75-year old music legend has been hospitalized with pneumonia since last month.
It’s a new honor for Stevie Wonder. He’s getting the 2012 Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards.
The Gospel Music Hall Of Fame will be inducting the Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin in its next ceremony.
Rihanna will be performing on FOX’s American Idol finale on May 23rd.

Ochocinco and Evelyn have set a date! Chad Ochocinco Johnson and Evelyn Lozada are prepping their own reality series spinoff from Basketball Wives. In the meantime, the couple has announced their plans to marry this July.
In more realty show news, get ready for Basketball Wives…. the movie! Shaunie O’Neal, the force behind the VH1 reality show, is in talks with Producer Tracey Edmonds (Soul Food) to do a basketball movie. O’Neal is under pressure because of the criticism surrounding her Basketball Wives shows, so she is looking in a new direction. The reality show has come under fire because off all the negativity and fighting. There is already a petition 7,000 strong calling for a boycott of the show and star Evelyn Lozada, who is seen as the main bully on the show. Tami Roman also stars on the show, and she says it’s the producers’ fault because of how they edit the show. Roman’s exploits on the show (fighting and drinking) are well documented. Don’t be surprised if Basketball Wife Jennifer Williams is dropped from the show. Williams is suing the show’s producers regarding an incident where she was slapped on camera by Lozada’s assistant, Nia Crooks. The producers may counter sue Williams regarding her lawsuit because they feel her badmouthing the show is hurting the brand.
The Wawa Welcome America July 4th lineup has been announced. The Roots, Daryl Hall, Queen Latifah, Common and Joe Jonas will all be performing on the steps of The Art Museum.
Author Toni Morrison is getting a new honor. She is going to be awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom. The 81-year old author just released a new book called Home. Morrison is best known for the books The Bluest Eye, Song Of Solomon and Beloved.
The E network is getting ready for Mary J. Blige. She’s going to be one of the stars of the talent series Opening Act. It’s a talent competition show where they search for talent on the internet. The winner will open up for an A-list music star. The show debuts July 9th. Check out Mary on the latest issue of Essence magazine. She is the guest editor for the month of June.

The Soul Man is the name of Cedric The Entertainer’s new TV Land sitcom. He stars along with Actress/Comedienne Niecy Nash where he plays Reverend Boyce and R&B singer turned preacher. The show debuts later this year.
John Legend is replacing Lionel Richie on the ABC singing reality show Duets. Now that Richie will be on tour to promote his number one album Tuskegee, Legend will join Kelly Clarkson and Robin Thicke as they go across the country searching for the perfect duet partner. The show premieres May 24th on ABC.
In more Lionel Richie news, he’s made a huge comeback. His new album Tuskegee,hit #1 on the charts. That’s his first time back at #1 in 26 years. This summer is going to be even more exciting for Richie. He is going to be inducted into the Apollo Theatre Hall Of Fame. The late Etta James will also be inducted with Richie. They are in good company with previous Inductees Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson and Patti LaBelle.
Queen Latifah will be headlining a gay pride festival in California later this month. A lot of people are wondering if Latifah is making a statement with her appearance at this event.
Filmmaker Rel Dowdel has a new movie coming out Changing The Game which will hit theatres this Friday. The movie is playing locally at the Lowe’s in Cherry Hill. I have a small role in the film. I play a radio newscaster.
Supermodel Naomi Campbell is coming to TV in a new reality competition show. On the show, The Face, Campbell will serve as a judge and it will air on the Oxygen channel.
The DeSean Jackson Foundation For Pancreatic Cancer and Pastor James S. Hall, Jr. of Triumph Baptist Church will team up for a health fair and community day, Saturday, May 12th from 10am to 3pm.There’ll be screenings, seminars on pancreatic, lung, stomach and liver cancers, anti-bullying programs, praise dancing, drill teams, a moon bounce and entertainment for the entire family. Kevin Hart has been added to the lineup of The Essence Music Festival, July 6th - 8th in New Orleans. Also on the bill are Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Ledisi, Marsha Ambrosius, Keyshia Cole, Fantasia and SWV. On Sunday, July 8th, there will be a gospel explosion with Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary and Fred Hammond. Get ready for the spinoff of Love And Hip Hop. Jim Jones, Chrissy and Mama Jones are leaving VH1’s Love And Hip Hop for their own VH1 show: Jim And The Family Jones. The show debuts later this year.
Beverly Johnson’s daughter, Anansa Sims, is expecting her second child with her husband David Patterson. The new baby will join her nine-month old sister Ava. Beverly Johnson and her family recently launched their reality show, Beverly’s Full House. The supermodel’s cable show airs on Saturdays nights at 10pm on OWN.
Singer Ledisi is writing her first book entitled Better Than Alright: Finding Peace, Love and Power. She is also coming to town Sunday, June 24th at the Keswick with Eric Benet. She will be doing a book signing on Wednesday, June 6th at the African American Museum, 7th and Arch Streets.
Jill Scott is bringing her summer block party back to town on Saturday, June 23rd. It’ll be Jill, Kem and DJ Jazzy Jeff at the Mann Center For The Performing Arts, 52nd and Parkside.
Look for major changes on America’s Next Top Model. Tyra Banks is shaking the show up for the 19th season. Nigel Barker, Miss J (Jay Alexander) and Mr. J (Jay Manuel) have been let go. No word yet on who will replace them. Banks said even though she loves her guys, it was time to give the show a lift. The ex-America’s Top Model judges have been making the rounds in the press, and for now, they say they’re ready to move on to other things.
The VH1 series Single Ladies, starring LisaRaye, kicks off its second season Memorial Day, May 28th.
Check out the changes coming to the BET network. Reed Between The Lines with Tracee Ellis Ross and Malcolm-Jamal Warner is being renewed along with sitcoms The Game and Let’s Stay Together. The Soul Train Awards will now be a three-day event hosted by Cedric The Entertainer. It will include a comedy show and a concert headlined by R Kelly. Chris Rock’s brother, Comedian Tony Rock, will be hosting a new show called Apollo Live. Gabrielle Union is starring in the series Being Mary Jane. Sparkle movie Co-Star Tika Sumpter has joined the cast of Being Mary Jane as well. Kevin Hart is getting a BETshow called Househusbands. It’s a spinoff of a skit he did for The BET Awards. The 2013 BET Awards will be a week-long event. Get ready for the second generation Wayans featuring the younger version of the Wayans family. Judge Mathis has new show coming called The Mathis Project. Finally, former CNN News Anchor T.J. Holmes is getting a late night show. It’s a mixture of news and comedy called Don’t Sleep With T.J. Holmes. Holmes says imagine Real Time (Bill Maher), The Daily Show (Jon Stewart) or The Colbert Report (Stephen Colbert) with an African American slant.
ABC is making changes in their daytime lineup. The show The Chew has been renewed while The Revolution is being cancelled. General Hospital stays, and Katie Couric debuts with her daytime show in September 10th. Once the show The Revolution leaves the air, look for an afternoon version of Good Morning America to fill that slot.
The Starz series Boss returns August 17th with Kelsey Grammar, Sanaa Lathan and Rapper/Actor T.I.
Jill Scott is coming to VH1 Storytellers. Her episode airs May 16th.
Will Smith returns to the big screen in Men Black III on May 25th.
Dr. Ian Smith is back with a new book, and it’s an insight about men. The book, The Truth About Men, is a revealing look at how men really feel. Dr. Smith is best known for Celebrity Fit Club, and The 50-Million Pound Challenge.
Production is underway for a new Jackie Robinson movie. Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, and now a new movie is being made about the baseball legend. Robinson himself starred with Ruby Dee in the 1950 film The Jackie Robinson Story. The new movie will star newcomer Chadwick Boseman as Robinson. Actors Harrison Ford and T.R. Knight will also star. The movie, called 42, is coming out April 12th, 2013. The day Major League Baseball celebrates the annual Jackie Robinson Day.
Get ready for the TV remake of the hit movie Steel Magnolias. In 1989, the movie made a star out of Julia Roberts. The 80’s classic also starred Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine and Sally Field. The Lifetime network is doing a remake featuring an African American cast. Queen Latifah, Jill Scott, Phylicia Rashad and Alfre Woodard are starring in the TV version, which will air later this year.
Upcoming DVD releases: George Lucas’ movie about the Tuskegee Airmen, Red Tails, comes out May 22nd.
One of the most anticipated movies of the year has to be Sparkle. The movie features Whitney Houston in her last movie role and it also stars Jordin Sparks, Mike Epps, Derek Luke, Cee-Lo Green, Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter. The movie opens on theatres August 17th.
Get ready for the latest Tyler Perry production Madea Gets A Job. It’s coming to Philadelphia May 18th-20th at the Liacouras Center. The show is excellent, and the music is going to blow you away. This has to be the best touring cast yet. The singing is incredible, and Perry has a lot of surprises for his fans. I had such a good time when I visited D.C. to see the production. Get your tickets and get ready for a great show. Perry also has two movies coming out within the year: Madea’s Witness Protection with Romeo Miller on June 29th and The Marriage Counselor with Brandy and Jurnee Smollett.
Usher is getting ready for the big screen. He will be playing Boxing Great Sugar Ray Leonard in an upcoming movie. He is currently training in London. Usher has a new CD, Looking For Myself, coming out on June 22nd.
Former Disney Star Corbin Bleu is on Broadway. He’s starring in the Broadway revival of Godspell. Raven-Symoné is also currently on Broadway now. Raven best known for her Disney hit That’s So Raven and for getting her start on The Cosby Show. Raven joined the cast of Sister Act starring in the lead role. Raven started on Broadway with The Boys Choir Of Harlem at the age of five.
Sade’s 2011 concert tour is coming to DVD and CD. Sade: Bring Me Home features 22 performances and arrives in stores May 22nd.
There will be no West Oak Lane Jazz & Arts Festival this year. After nine years, the event will not be happening. In the past, many artists have participated in the festival including Teena Marie, The O’Jays, Mandrill, Chaka Khan, Jeffrey Osborne, Esperanza Spalding and Ashford & Simpson, to name a few. I hear a new arts and culture series of events will be happening throughout the year in the city. We will still miss this annual three-day event.
R Kelly is back with a new book about his life titled Soul-A-Coaster. I had a chance to talk to Kelly. He told me he wants people to get to know Robert, and how he came up in the business. The book is coming out June 12th. Kelly also has a new song Share My Love and a new album, Write Me Back, coming out in May. Kelly is also working on the soundtrack for the Sparkle movie remake.
