For 15 years, the Pioneer Awards has held the distinction of being the only event of its kind to honor the musical artists who pioneered and continue to keep soul music alive. In past years, legendary artists in the upper echelons of the soul music industry have attended the event to receive awards. Last year honorees included artists Chubby Checker, Bettye LaVette, Barbara Mason, the Delfonics, Frankie Beverly and Maze. Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, received a Lifetime Achievement Award. Legacy Tribute honors were presented to Patti LaBelle, Smokey Robinson and the late Otis Redding.

R&B Foundation chairman, Kendall Minter, said “Two decades into the mix, the R&B Foundation has never veered from its path of supporting and honoring extraordinary artists and preserving the musical legacy of R&B. It is a musical genre that is uniquely American and hugely popular throughout the world. For the 20th year anniversary of the Foundation and the 15th presentation of the Pioneer Awards, with the help of the City of Philadelphia, we are elevating the entire dynamic to a whole new level, creating a platform that establishes R&B once and for all as the ‘soul of world music’ and Philly as the ‘R&B capital of the world’. We are going platinum and want to get everybody on this ‘Love Train’ to the future.”
